Metro Atlanta Faces Rising Anxiety as 2024 Presidential Election Approaches

Metro Atlanta Residents Grappling With Election Anxiety

ATLANTA – With the 2024 presidential election just around the corner, the atmosphere in metro Atlanta is buzzing with a mix of tension and expectation. Many residents are experiencing anxiety as the days dwindle down to election week, each handling their stress in uniquely personal ways.

We recently ventured into the heart of Atlanta to talk to voters about how they’re coping with the mounting pressure. One resident shared candidly, “I’m very anxious, I would love to know what the results are.” This sense of urgency and unease is widespread, as everyone seems to be aware of how close the polling places are to closing.

Conflicting Narratives and Information Overload

Social media platforms are often a go-to for quick updates, yet their differing accounts of election news only escalate worries. “Each platform tells a different story, it makes it hard to trust each one,” noted another voter. The barrage of political advertisements on television isn’t helping either. “I voted on day one because I was tired of thinking of it, tired of all of the commercials, tired of stressing about it,” said one citizen, echoing a sentiment felt widely across Atlanta.

Doctor’s Advice: Managing Election-Induced Anxiety

In these trying times, it is crucial to find ways to maintain your mental well-being. We reached out to two esteemed medical professionals for their advice on handling the stress that accompanies such a significant political event.

According to a primary care doctor at one of the local hospitals, there are essential pillars to focus on. “You need to take care of your sleep, you need to take care of your blood pressure and most importantly take care of the people who love you, regardless of whether they have different political viewpoints,” he advised. The doctor emphasized the importance of seeking professional help if anxiety becomes overwhelming, warning that such stressors can disrupt sleep patterns, spike blood pressure, and even lead to medical concerns.

Step Back and Set Boundaries

Meanwhile, a local psychiatrist highlighted an often overlooked strategy: setting boundaries. “It is absolutely okay to say, ‘I don’t want to talk about that,’ and remove yourself from a conversation that you feel is going to stress you out or is anxiety-provoking,” she asserted.

Furthermore, taking a break and getting some fresh air can make a significant difference. The psychiatrist pointed out the value of focusing on what is possible to change in our surroundings. “If you’re in a situation that is stressful or anxiety-provoking, change it. Change the environment, change how you respond,” she advised.

A Pause From Screens

Both doctors recommend disconnecting from screens to mitigate the frenzy of media input. Stepping away from your phone, computer, or television, and turning attention to what’s immediately around you can ground your experience in the present moment, reducing anxiety and establishing a sense of control amidst the whirlwind of election news.

As the countdown begins, it’s essential to recognize that while much is beyond our reach in the world of politics, self-care, and maintaining mental health, is firmly within our grasp. Taking these measures could make the difference in not only surviving but thriving through the 2024 election season.
