Atlanta Celebrates the Russell Family with Four Pillar Tribute
On a beautiful evening in Atlanta, the city rolled out the red carpet for a momentous occasion that highlighted a family’s incredible legacy. For the first time in 34 years, the Council for Quality Growth’s Four Pillars Tribute honored a family rather than an individual. This year, the tribute was given to the family of the late Herman J. Russell Sr., a remarkable figure who founded one of the country’s largest minority-owned companies and played a pivotal role in constructing many of Atlanta’s iconic buildings.
A Celebration of Legacy
The awards ceremony took place on October 10, at the sprawling Georgia World Congress Center, with around 1,500 guests in attendance. It was an evening filled with joy and reflection, as attendees celebrated how the Russell family has shaped the Atlanta we know today. Mayor Andre Dickens set the tone when he said, “We are celebrating a family’s commitment to community,” emphasizing the evening’s theme of “Pure grit. Built to last.“
A Multigenerational Legacy
Accepting the award on behalf of the family were Jerome and Michael Russell Sr., the two sons of the late Herman Russell Sr. Their sister, Donata Russell Ross, could not be present but was honored through a special video presentation during the event. Speakers throughout the night shared stories that traversed eight decades of Atlanta’s history, showcasing the significant impact of the Russell family.
For example, Tad Hutcheson, Delta Air Lines’ vice president of community engagement, highlighted how Herman Russell Sr. played a vital role in constructing Delta’s headquarters back in 1977. “Every building at Delta was built by the Russell family,” he remarked, underscoring the family’s substantial contributions to the city.
Bridging the Divide
U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, a senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, expressed similarly, saying he literally stands in the sanctuary that Herman Russell built, declaring, “We are living inside the living legacy of Herman J. Russell.” The night was about more than just buildings; it was about the community that those buildings represent.
Jay Bailey, CEO of the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE), spoke passionately about how the former construction headquarters has transformed into a dynamic hub for training Black entrepreneurs. Business leader Keith Mason praised Herman Russell’s unwavering commitment to fostering partnerships across racial lines. “He was a bridge builder,” Mason asserted, referring to his efforts in strengthening Atlanta’s social fabric.
The Future Looks Bright
When accepting the award, Jerome Russell described it as “one of the highest honors H.J. Russell had ever received.” Reflecting on their father’s legacy, the two brothers expressed deep pride and gratitude. Jerome, turning 62 this August, mentioned, “Where we are now is very spiritual and magical,” highlighting their ongoing mission to build upon the solid foundation laid by their father.
Michael Russell, current CEO of H.J. Russell & Co., noted that with November approaching, it marks ten years since their father’s passing, a significant milestone that has left a lasting impact on their vision moving forward. “My father’s focus in the last quarter of his life was very much on the next generation,” Michael shared, mentioning how his father’s influence continues through his grandchildren.
Reflections on Change
But as they look back, they also recognize the changes that have swept through the city. “Back then, creating Black and white partnerships was a mission-driven initiative,” Michael remarked, contrasting it with today’s more transactional nature of business relationships. “We are more in silos,” Jerome added, stressing the importance of collaboration.

As they navigate their own paths, both brothers are dedicated to shaping their community and continuing their family’s legacy. While Michael focuses on the growth of H.J. Russell, Jerome’s passion lies in the foundations of RICE and community service. “Every day is precious,” Jerome concluded, echoing the family’s enduring commitment to improving the city of Atlanta.
