Henry County, Georgia: A Haven for Hurricane Milton Evacuees
The state of Georgia is witnessing a significant influx of people as countless residents from Florida hit the road in a bid to escape the wrath of Hurricane Milton. Known for its ferocity, the hurricane has pushed a wave of Floridians to relocate temporarily, leading to a nearly complete sell-out of hotel rooms across several regions of Georgia, especially those south of Atlanta. Some Georgia locals are terming this phenomenon as the hurricane hotel headache.
Jennifer Blackmon, a resident from Clearwater, Florida, narrated her experience, stating, “It was difficult because there was a swarm of people trying to come in.” Many Floridians are dealing with similar challenges, trying to secure accommodation amid a sea of evacuees all hoping for a safe refuge. “If somebody did not call and communicate with the reservation, then they actually handed it over and canceled it and gave their room to somebody else,” Blackmon added.
The Journey to Georgia: A Tale of Patience and Fortune
Evacuees on the move, like Blackmon and her family, have faced arduous journeys. A drive that typically spans six hours from Clearwater to Georgia morphed into an exhausting 12-hour expedition. This daunting trip was further weighed down by the uncertainty of whether a hotel room would be available upon their arrival. Fortunately, Blackmon’s family managed to secure a room, offering them a much-needed sense of relief and safety.
But not everyone has been so lucky. As families scramble for available accommodations, many find themselves without a place to stay. “The people that were in front of me, they were very upset,” Blackmon recalled. “They had children and everything else, and so they said that they were just going to wait in the parking lot overnight, and hopefully something opens up at 11 a.m. that they can get into.”
Weather Woes Continue
Unfortunately, the weather situation continues to complicate matters for those already on edge due to Hurricane Milton. The National Weather Service has issued tornado warnings as the outer bands of the storm make their presence felt. A live feed from the Florida Department of Transportation vividly captured a tornado on the ground early Wednesday morning, painting a sobering picture of the unpredictable weather conditions.
Seeking Shelter: The Options and Outlook
Residents have been urged to seek accommodations north of Atlanta due to the heavy impact of availability in the southern parts of Georgia, compounded by the ongoing relief efforts for Hurricane Helene. According to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), room availability is scarce. GEMA Director Chris Stallings advised, “If you plan on staying somewhere in Georgia, south of Atlanta, it’s going to be difficult to find.”
Despite the challenges and stress, those who secured refuge express relief and gratitude for their safety. Deena Harris from Bradenton, Florida, shared, “I’m just glad me and my daughter [and] my grandson are safe.” Yet, the uncertainty looms as many left friends and family behind, hoping for the best amidst the storm. “All we can do is just pray that we come home to something,” Blackmon expressed with a hopeful heart.
