On a crisp October morning, the heart of Atlanta buzzed with excitement as it hosted the enthusing 10th Annual Mayor’s 5K on the 5th Runway. This iconic event took place at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, turning its runway into a unique race track for more than 2,100 vivacious runners and walkers eager to partake in the celebration.

The event was nothing short of spectacular, bringing in participants from 25 different states, with ages stretching notably from 10 to a seasoned 81 years. The ever-inspiring Mayor of Atlanta welcomed everyone with open arms, keen on emphasizing the significance of education and community development. With every stride taken on the runway, the spirit of Atlanta shone brighter, showcasing a collective enthusiasm for a cause that hits close to home—supporting deserving students in the city.

Racing with Purpose

Building on its strong tradition, this year’s race boldly claimed victory not just on the track but also in its fundraising achievements. The event triumphantly raised over $250,000, fueled by in-kind contributions exceeding $100,000 courtesy of 29 generous sponsors. Noteworthy names such as Delta Air Lines and Hudson Group lent their support, ensuring the event was a well-furnished affair.

The essence of the run extended beyond fitness, focusing keenly on availing scholarships to young scholars, echoing the Mayor’s sentiment, “We’re running to give scholarships to deserving students in Atlanta.” Every step on the tarmac was a step toward a brighter future.

A Day Full of Joy and Entertainment

The runway wasn’t just for running—musical notes filled the atmosphere with high spirits, heightened by live music and coordinated line dancing. The Atlanta Hawks Dancers, Freddie the Falcon from the Atlanta Falcons, and Blooper from the Atlanta Braves, among others, brought their abundant contagion of joy, mesmerizing everyone present. The Martin Luther King, Jr. High School drumline’s riveting beats added an extra layer of excitement and hometown pride.

Smoothie King further fueled the participants, generously refreshing every runner with energizing smoothie samples, ensuring everyone was hydrated and ready to tackle the world.

Eco-Conscious Efforts

Always forethoughtful, this year’s Mayor’s 5K embraced sustainability with fervor. Collaborating with EcoSneakers, runners were encouraged to hand over their worn footwear for recycling—a whole bin was delightfully filled to the brim. Additionally, eco-friendly measures extended to plastic waste, as the event managed to separate and send a total of 261 pounds of plastic to the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials for ethical recycling.

The runway sparkled not only with sweat and determination but also with a noble intent—an imperative to reduce waste and uphold environmental stewardship, which held promise through their sustainability educative setups.
