Atlanta Celebrates Jimmy Carter’s Centennial: A Tribute to a Life of Service

ATLANTA – The anticipation has been building for weeks, and now the momentous day is almost here. Former President Jimmy Carter is set to celebrate his 100th birthday tomorrow, marking a significant milestone in the life of a beloved public figure who’s dedicated his life to promoting human rights and bettering the world.

Although Carter has been in hospice care since February of last year, the celebrations have been anything but subdued. Instead, they’ve been a joyful reflection of his rich life and lasting impact.

Musical Tribute Lights Up the Fox Theatre

Earlier this month, a star-studded concert was held at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, honoring Carter. The event, hosted by the Carter Center, featured performances by a stellar lineup including Angelique Kidjo, BeBe Winans, The B-52s, Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, GROUPLOVE, Maren Morris, The War And Treaty, and The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus. Adding to the night’s sparkle, numerous celebrities and former presidents made appearances via video.

Though not all could attend in person, the musical extravaganza will be broadcast on GPB TV at 7 p.m. on October 1, making sure everyone can join in the celebration.

Messages of Hope from Friends and Dignitaries

Over the weekend, President Joe Biden, one of Carter’s close friends, sent a heartfelt birthday message. Biden celebrated Carter’s “hopeful vision” for the country and his unwavering belief in human goodness.

Biden, the oldest sitting president in U.S. history, couldn’t help but acknowledge Carter’s unique place in history as the oldest living U.S. president.

Plains Peanut Festival and JC100 Film Festival Add to Festivities

Carter’s milestone was also recognized at the annual Plains Peanut Festival this past weekend. The celebrations didn’t stop there; the JC100 Film Festival at the Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta drew numerous admirers on Saturday. Additionally, the Presidential Library has put together a special exhibit titled 100 Portraits for 100 Years of Jimmy Carter, which is on display now.

Community Participation and Environmental Stewardship

The Carter Center has extended an invitation to the public to submit photos to contribute to a mosaic celebrating Carter’s legacy. This community engagement speaks to Carter’s enduring connection with the people.

In a tribute to his lifelong commitment to the environment, 101 trees will be planted in his honor. Tomorrow will see the first two trees planted at the State Capitol and the Carter Center, with 99 more to follow by next March. This tree-planting initiative highlights Carter’s dedication to environmental stewardship and community service, core principles that have defined his life.

As Atlanta gears up for the grand celebrations, the air is filled with a mix of nostalgia and gratitude. Jimmy Carter’s journey through a century is a heartwarming testament to the power of hope, service, and unwavering dedication to the greater good.

All Eyes on Tomorrow

The events of the past few weeks have set the stage beautifully for the big day tomorrow, which promises to be a heartfelt tribute to a man who has touched countless lives. As the city of Atlanta and admirers worldwide prepare to celebrate, we are reminded of the enduring legacy of Jimmy Carter — a champion of peace, a steward of the environment, and a tireless advocate for human rights.

Happy 100th Birthday, President Carter!
