After earning her master’s degree in American studies from Columbia University, she found herself back in Atlanta, where her artistic pursuits had been too few and far between during her time teaching at an elementary school. “What the hell is missing?” she often pondered, realizing she was craving the daily practice of art.
Having acted since her high school days at Grady High School and Spelman College, she knew she had to put her energy into performing arts instead of traditional academia. “In the 16 years since I stood at that crossroads, I’ve never looked back,” Deadwyler shares confidently. “Staying connected to my community and where I came from was essential to my development.”
Making a Mark in Atlanta
Fast forward to today, and Deadwyler has firmly established herself as a key figure in Atlanta’s artistic community. She has performed poetry, directed short films, and won several accolades, including a Creative Loafing Atlanta Critics Pick for Best Actress. It’s no wonder Hollywood eventually took notice.
“She’s a chameleon,” praises Kenny Leon, director and founder of the True Colors Theatre Company. Leon noted that Deadwyler embodies characteristics reminiscent of greats like Viola Davis and Eartha Kitt. “She plays any range, any age, any genre. She’s fierce; she’s courageous. Always rooted in the truth,” he adds.
The Year of Breakthroughs
This year alone has been nothing short of phenomenal for Deadwyler. She has already appeared in I Saw the TV Glow and Parallel, with more projects on the horizon, including Carry-On and the highly-anticipated The Piano Lesson. In March 2025, we’ll see her produce and star in The Woman in the Yard, coming from Blumhouse Productions.
While her path has seen her gain international recognition, Deadwyler emphasizes the importance of her roots. “Everything that has happened for me is deeply rooted in Southern culture,” she says, proudly championing the artists and craftsmen in her hometown.
Artistic Growth and Influences
Deadwyler’s artistic vision was influenced by her childhood, where her mother enrolled her in dance classes after spotting her grooving to Soul Train at the age of four. “Everything I do is led with the body,” she explains, combining her dance skills with teachings from her experience in tae kwon do to enhance her physicality as a performer.
Her love for storytelling and performance began in school productions and blossomed during studies at Spelman College. There, she majored in history while participating in various arts programs—always keeping that creative spark alive. As a young actress, Deadwyler showcased her chameleon-like talents, tackling roles across a wide emotional range.
Returning to Atlanta: A Choice of Heart
Despite the allure of Hollywood, Deadwyler made a conscious choice to remain in Atlanta. “I wanted my own pool—one where I could cultivate my art without being influenced by everyone else,” she explains. Her conviction in her craft has only deepened as she continues to explore the intersections of history, gender, and race through her performances.
“You need to marry wisdom with innovation,” states Deadwyler, reflecting on how her roots inform her approach. Whether diving into maternal themes in her latest projects or embodying complex Black women in history, she aims for authenticity in every role.

As Deadwyler gears up for her role in The Piano Lesson, she feels excited about continuing to innovate while honoring the stories shared by her ancestors. “I want to understand what it means to be human in this body,” she states passionately.
