Atlanta Braves Foundation, organizations come together to feed Georgia families in need
MARIETTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Boxes went into cars one after another Thursday at Pearson Middle School. The Atlanta Braves Foundation partnered with Chick-fil-A, MUST Ministries and other organizations to provide free food as part of their Braves Home Plate Project.
“This is one of my territories, where my food pantry is at and the event is just amazing. I think it surpassed everybody’s expectations,” said Brandy Walters, MUST Ministries senior program manager.
“We were expecting over 300. I think we are over 1,000 easily,” Jamie Lackey, Helping Mamas, Inc. CEO, said. Pearson Middle School partnered with organizations like Helping Mamas and the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation for a back-to-school event- that provided free vaccinations, exams, backpacks, diapers and more.
“It is the most beautiful event I have ever seen because there are so many people here helping the community and we are just happy to be a part of it,” said Lackey.
“It is a double-edged sword. It is great there are so many people out here and we can make such a big impact. On the other side, it is sad there is so much need out there,” said Tad Low with Chick-fil-A. The Braves Home Plate project was created after the pandemic to fight food insecurity within the community. Organizers said 80,000 pounds of food have been given to needy families in metro Atlanta.
