Driver Faces DUI Charges After Collision Involving Atlanta Fire Truck on I-85
ATLANTA – A devastating crash involving an Atlanta fire truck on Interstate 85, near Buford Highway, resulted in a woman being charged with DUI among other counts. The accident, which happened around 2:30 a.m., briefly shut down the northbound lanes of the interstate, causing traffic disruption.
Details of the Incident
The Atlanta Fire Department Truck No. 29 was reportedly stationary on I-85 when a white Mercedes crashed into its rear. Following a preliminary investigation, authorities identified the driver of the Mercedes as Alisha Teresa Gillooly. She was swiftly taken to the hospital for medical treatment while Atlanta police and crime scene investigators took control of the scene.
Scene investigators and crews worked tirelessly to clear the site, successfully loading the firetruck onto a tow truck while additional investigations were taking place. The severity of the accident led to the closure of the interstate for about an hour. However, police have since confirmed that all lanes are now open for normal traffic.
Charges and Injuries
Following medical treatment, Gillooly was charged with D.U.I. Alcohol (less safe), reckless driving, failure to adhere to Georgia’s Move Over Law, driving with a suspended license, and other offenses. However, it’s worth noting that the firefighters who were in the truck at the time of the accident did not sustain any injuries.
Warnings for Drivers
Authorities are using this incident as a stark reminder for drivers to stay alert while behind the wheel, especially during late hours. They are also reminding drivers of the Move Over Law, which requires drivers to shift over one lane or slow down when approaching stationary emergency vehicles. Violating this law can result in hefty fines, points on your license, or even jail time, according to Georgia state law.
Moving Forward
As the investigation continues, police have confirmed that alcohol is considered a factor in the crash. This underlines the continuing problem of drinking and driving, which injures and takes the lives of thousands of people each year. Law enforcement across the country is stressing the importance of responsible alcohol consumption, especially if you plan to get behind the wheel.
