DeKalb Student Dies After Suffering ‘Medical Emergency:’ Principal

Dunwoody, GA – May 6, 2024

A Dunwoody High student who suffered a medical emergency and prompted a school lockdown Monday has died, according to Dunwoody High School Principal Tom Bass.

The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, passed away after experiencing a medical emergency at the school. Authorities from Dunwoody Police and DeKalb County School Police responded to the incident, leading to a temporary and partial lockdown of the school premises.

Principal Tom Bass conveyed the tragic news to families in a letter, indicating that out of respect for the family’s privacy, limited details will be shared regarding the circumstances surrounding the student’s passing.

“We will not disclose additional information about the circumstances surrounding this student’s passing out of respect for the family’s privacy,” Bass said.

The medical emergency occurred during a testing period at the school, prompting the implementation of a lockdown to restrict movement within the campus. Students and staff were informed of the student’s demise, with counseling resources and personnel being made available to support those grieving.

“Everyone reacts to death differently. Our priority is respecting each other’s feelings and emotions,” Bass expressed. “As a family, we encourage you to talk with your child about this incident to help them share their thoughts and reactions. The Dunwoody High School community is here to support and uplift in any way we can.”

Starting Tuesday, students can meet with members of the school’s District Crisis Team for support, with the team remaining accessible for as long as needed.

“Our deepest sympathies remain with the student’s loved ones during this challenging period,” Bass concluded.
