Atlanta Celebrates Young Essay Champions: A Glimpse into Future Water Guardians

ATLANTA – With just a few clouds dotting the sky and the crisp air hinting at winter with temperatures dropping to around 35°F, excitement was bubbling over at the Georgia State Capitol. The cause for celebration? A group of remarkably talented middle school students from metro Atlanta, honored for their winning essays in the 23rd annual Middle School Essay Contest held by the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District.

The lively event took place on December 17th, marking a special milestone not just in the students’ lives, but for the entire community as well. Fifteen students and their essays stood out amongst more than 800 entries, providing thought-provoking insights into our cherished river basins here in North Georgia. It’s like reading the future through the eyes of budding environmental champions!

In a field rich with young talent, one student took the spotlight. Julianne Roberts from Lanier Christian Academy not only shone bright but also took home the crown as the District-wide winner. Her essay, a thoughtful examination comparing the professions of water process engineer and water quality superintendent, caught the attention of judges with its captivating introduction asking, “Have you ever wondered how you manage to have [water] so conveniently when others have to walk miles?” A question that resonates deeply, don’t you think?

Not far behind was Reid Bond, a 6th-grade scholar from Durham Middle School in Cobb County. Reid’s piece was poignant, packing a punch as it stressed the critical need for spreading awareness about protecting our waterways from dangerous runoff. His words remind us of the simple joys of life that water sustenance supports, like fishing.
